More than one angle on GCSE grading (p7) Last week saw the announcement of the new GCSE grading system, which will support the introduction of new qualifications starting in 2015. The current A to G scale will be replaced with a 9-1 numerical system, with grade 4 being equivalent to a grade C, grade 7 to a grade A and the new ‘uber-grade’ 9 given to strictly controlled group of top performers.



The importance of numeracy and literacy

As news is released reporting on England’s low results in literacy and numeracy, NCFE is working to provide solutions to colleges allowing flexibility and a tailored approach to offering Maths and English qualifications. A study by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has shown how England’s 16 to 24 year olds are falling behind their Asian and European counterparts - ranking 22nd for literacy and 21st for numeracy.



UK employers want more control over training

According to a recent survey for the Confederation of British Industry, 93% of 294 firms felt they knew best what employee skills they needed and would like qualifications to be better tailored to their needs. Almost half of those surveyed (45%) stated that many applicants with the right skills did not have the right mindset for work, while 39% said they often lacked any general work experience. The survey also revealed that 62% of organisations are worried about poor computing skills, 55% about literacy and 51% about numeracy.



Exams getting easier? What about Functional Skills?

It’s difficult to ignore the recent headlines referring to the ‘race to the bottom’, and the lowering of standards in education. The sector has seen heavy criticism over the last few weeks for syllabuses being too accessible and qualifications too achievable. The assertion is that organisations ‘shop around’ for the easiest courses to deliver, allowing them to appear higher in the league tables.  



Funding rates for Functional Skills in 2013/14

With just 2 months to go until the switch from Key Skills to Functional Skills, many of you will be taking steps in preparation for this important transition - putting delivery models and policies in place, contextualising Functional Skills to different sector areas, thinking about learner activities, assessment, teaching and learning methods. As Functional Skills are the words on everyone’s lips, it seems fitting that the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) has recently announced the rates for Functional Skills in the new streamlined funding system for adult learning.
